this is book 8 of 10.
to put it lightly i'm a fan of this series...
...
yeah thast putting it really likely.
I don't know why i love it so much.... endless eight arc should be enough for me to hate it... but i don't.
I think the story telling is clever (no matter which order of the 4 available you watch it in)
I like the characters... since even the vapid Moe girl seems to have some depth....
i really like the music.... which is funny cause it's mostly saxaphone and i tend to dislike songs with sax in it...
and I adore Kyon's snark.... in fact if Kyon weren't in the series i wouldn't watch/read.... considering he's the main character....
oh.... on that note.
Dear person who writes the back of the book.
Haruhi IS the Titular character.... no one can argue that fact.
HOWEVER
she is NOT the main character.
Kyon is the main character, we see it through his eyes, we hear his inner and sometimes a surprise to him outer Dialogue, we know exactly as much as he does.
What do we know about Haruhi? we know thats she's a crazy try anything girl with godlike powers that she either got herself three years prior or was given three years prior.
thats it, we've never been to her house, we know nothing about her in general other then she enjoys having Fun..... but not any kind of fun... no it has to be special.
But otherwise she's just a plotpoint, she drives the story forward despite how little she takes part in it.
and she barely takes part in it cause she can't... the others wont let her.
But Kyon gets to take part in all the crazy shit.... therefor it's his story *nods*
oh i'm supposed to talk about Indignation.... right.
So this book has two short stories, completely new content which always makes me smile.
Haruhi does have more of a part in both but still she doesn't take part in anything.... but still it's nice to see the club continue it's activities in such a crazy way... it's also good to see how she really can be a kind and thoughtful person... quite grounded in reality...
Both stories had a moment that made me laugh, one was what kyon was forced to write about (though when it wasn't about a certain thing i was upset cause i wanna know more about a certain character who STILL hasn't been introduced... but has been hinted at since the first episode/chapter) and the other was a certain joke from a certain character..... mostly cause i use it to torture a good friend of mine when i wanna be spoiler free.
But in the end... not my fav volume, while i love Kyon's epiphany (for someone who claims to be stupid he sure as hell can be really smart)I just felt like it didn't really advance the plot too much and there were no hints to my Kyonism theory Except for Kyon's little epiphany... . it was just "lets allude to something we've been hinting at since day one" and "kyon has an epiphany as big if not bigger then Haruhi's 'how insignificant one person in a crowd' moment."
It is still good and i'm sure some of the things here will seem more important when i read the last two volumes..... which aren't out for a while.... i'm gunna go have a little cry now....
i'm terrible at this waiting thing... oh well.... i guess the waiting is good cause i kinda don't want it to end.... i like guessing at things like "will we see more of Koizumi's attitude? is Kyon really the god? Is Mikuru using mind control drugs in the tea (i'm not kidding that is a valid theory) what is Kyon's real name? would Itsuki really put it or the nickname in the acknowledgement section of his book?
who knows.... i wont till i read the next two.... and i really look forward to it.
but dammit i really hate that i have to wait so long... when is book 9 being released?
i'm seeing both April and June being release dates... i don't know which is correct....
....
...
..
.
thats so far away (ignoring that i waited two years for Lightbringer Book 2)
oh well... still love this series.... so snarky
A place where I will post reviews, personal art and maybe even some videos. please feel free to suggest things to read/watch/play or draw

Completed: the Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya
um.... i think we've established that i adore this series.... so there is going to be fangirling.
TL;DR : i love these light novels and if you have any interest in the show melancholy of haruhi suzumiya then i suggest you pick these books up since i doubt we'll get a season 3 any time soon.
Ok with that out of the way.
This is the... um... 7th novel in a series of 11
and i think this is the only novel so far to not have been in the anime at all.
It is kind of like disappearance in the fact that the entire novel focuses on one major story.
The story focuses mainly on time travel (though for once it's not kyon doing the time traveling) time paradoxes and the rise of the organization that opposes the ones surround haruhi.
Is it better then disappearance? No.... That is still probably up there as one of my fav arcs, in fact the beginning of this one resolves the disappearance arc for good which is both great and a little sad.
The main reason this isn't the best arc in my eyes is due to the focus... that being said it pretty much cements certain ideas i've had about the show since day one since in all truth the titular character is not the main character of the series.
but yeah i loved the random things they go through, poor kyon would be so tired after all that i'm sure and the resolution was great.
Plus the book actually made me squeak with delight at the mention of a single line by a handsom esper boy.
and yes he sais the same line in the anime and i squeaked when he said it there too.... not quite as epic as the trump card Kyon holds but still on of the best lines in a series like this.
spoiler free is hard.... *sighs*
the good:
everything, i adore being in kyons head and he goes through these adventures.
the bad:
nothing.... ok actually there is one bad thing i can think of..... the english novels are takign too long to be realeased.... these were done being written a while back and i hate waiting.... Indignation (which i think is the next one.... not 100%) doesn't release till november
then the next is in april... then the next in september and then the next---wait.... it doesn't have a date.... which could mean it's being merged with book 10 (since they are technically part 1 and 2) or it hasn't been confirmed yet.... ugh thats a whole year away! i can't wait that long.... *sobs*
oh well... i love this series so i'll probably wait *sighs*
anyways happy thanks giving.... yes i spent my day predominantly reading.... aside from next sunday (my birthday where i may or may not be working) this is my last day off till the 10 day hiatus around christmas so i had to enjoy this time off while i could... and reading is the best way to enjoy a day of freedom *nods*
okay lets see if i can finish more drawings by end of day.
but seriously go read this series... it's so good.

Completed: The Wavering of Haruhi Suzumiya
the sixth book in the series.... also it's the mark of my catching up with the novel releases... the next one is in June or July.... so far away.... *sighs*
another compilation of short stories.... and one again it adds a tiny bit more confusion to the time line...
The order so far is.
Melancholy
Boredom
1 chapter of Rampage
sigh
1st and 2nd chapter of Wavering... but not necessarily in order... since the second chapter can happen at any time in this chunk of time.
2nd chapter of Rampage
Disappearance
3rd chapter of wavering
last chapter of rampage
4th and 5th chapter of wavering (i am splitting these up cause there is still room in the middle potentially)
and i think that's not even completely correct... but it's the most simple way to put it.... okay...
Live Alive
In an earlier explanation of the time line the episode that shares this title was always in the same spot no matter what timeline you watched it in...
that has nothing to do with anything but i thought i should mention it.
Um this deals with the day of the culture festival that they shot the movie for, Kyon goes around to the stands and after trying to find a place to relax he goes to a concert hall and gets a surprise.
fav part(s)? Haruhi's reaction to after the situation... seeing that shyer side of her is nice. Also the wind blowing the grass back in her face.... you think someone who could warp the world wouldn't have allowed it to happen.... *files it away for more evidence*
The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00
This is the actual result of the short film, it's narrated by kyon as he tried to fill the plot holes and doesn't have any haruhi except off screen directions... it's fun and it's the first aired episode of the anime which actually put me off of the show at first... i am glad i persisted.
fav part? the rage he throws at Itsuki through the narration.... it really shows how much he dislikes the 'esper' boy
Love at First Sight
another Yuki focused chapter and it's new content, Kyon gets a call out of the blue from someone from his middle school saying he's fallen in love, no not with Kyon but a girl that kyon was with one day in may... she had short hair and glasses...
oh this can only end well
fav part? hm.... although i'm indifferent about this chapter since the ending was a little...well... hmm... granted the last line... *whimper*... anyways there is a scene with a HUGE misunderstanding and watching Haruhi freak out like that way a joy.
Where did the Cat go?
This takes place the day after Snowy Mountain syndrome, Itsuki had planned another murder mystery for the SOS brigade... but this time they all are in on the joke and there is a prize to the first person to figure out the 'murderer'.
Maybe i've been playing too much ace attorney but it's pretty easy to tell who the murderer is within a few pages. but still the explanation is fun.
Also i love the fact that we are seeing Itsuki break down a little... he's getting tired of being the permanent nice guy but since it's how Haruhi sees him he has to keep up the act.... or does it.... it's slowly chipping away and i love it
Fav part? again the chapter is goof but not the most interesting ones but i do like seeing more of Itsuki come through and seeing Haruhi have normal fun.
The Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina
Mikuru asks Kyon for a favor but she's been acting odd all day... she promises it wont involve going back in time but then why does she seem so on edge? so they go to pick up tea and go for a walk and they have a fateful encounter and Mikuru begins to wonder why her superiors refuse to tell her anything.
Fav part? um... i really liked this chapter but the ending... that was my most favorite thing to happen so far.... those last few pages made me laugh so hard i had to shut myself up so i wouldn't freak out my family.
if he stays true to his word and the next book is the aftermath of those two pages.... i will be so happy and it'll bump disappearance from my fav chapter so far spot.... it was really good.
but alas... this mean i wont be reviewing another one of these books for a few months.... why did i have to end on such a cliff hanger... still this is as good a time as any to mention my theory~
from here on i may spoil so things, consider this your only warning
There are a few theories floating around about who actually holds the power in this show... now the series has been completed in japan (as far as i know) so i may or may not be right or wrong.... but it doesn't matter... this is just what i have thought since i first saw the show 3 years ago... and apparently i'm not the only one.
Some people think that it's haruhi that holds all the power... since thats what the show constantly beats into you... keep her entertained and make her have a good time... and thats fine.... like i said i don't think this is wrong i would just be sad if this was the case.
Other Think Yuki is the one who has all the power.... well yeah technically she does.... out of all of the members of the SOS brigde she is the most poweful only cause she knows what her powers are.... but i don't think she's actually the one with all the power because she never does anything without permission from Kyon... why take orders from a human who is seemingly normal....
ah but that's the crux of it all isn't it...
So.... I personally believe that Kyon holds all the power.... but how is that possible... the entire show is based on the fact that he's a normal guy chosen by Suzumiya.... and i think that Yeah... in his current state he is a normal guy.... i just also happen to think that he winded up giving haruhi her power somehow.... so yeah he's technically powerless.... but he's the reason she has power....
why do i think this?
1. the whole thing claims to be about keepign haruhi bored.... yet many of the more crazy incidents haruhi stops being interested right before it gets good.... but they always ask kyon to stick around... even though if he's just a normal human he really has no power to do anything.
2. and as i mentioned before, Yuki who is an interface for the data overmind always looks to him for silent permission on damn near every action. despite her being the most powerful one in the group.
3. Itsuki alludes to the fact that he has a theory that Haruhi is not in fact a god but as i stated was granted her godlike powers through someone else.... he also seems to work harder to make sure Kyon is amused instead of Haruhi... despite the fact that kyon really doesn't like Itsuki.
4. many of the crazy things that happen aren't set in motion till Kyon things about it. Take the Mikuru Beam for example.... Haruhi hands Mikuru a colour contact and says "it's special but it's a secret" at first this does nothing.... until later she states "shoot you mikuru beam like this" this is when Kyon states "she can't shoot beams out of her eyes" but he thinks to himself 'can you?' while looking at mikuru.... then this time when she blinks... she actually fires a laser.... now the gap between haruhi sayign she can use the beam and kyon thinking about it is a bit longer then i stated and nothing happened there but yeah.... kyon thinks it's crazy for the pigeon to turn to doves this time of year and then they do...
5. Kyon doesn't have a name..... Kyon is a nickname given by his aunt and spread around by his little sister.... who also doesn't have a name... so far all we know about Kyons name is that it's hard to say... so he goes by Kyon..... which sounds surprisingly similar to John.... hmmm John smith you say.... maybe that is his real name.... alas the book kind of refutes it but i would have loved it to be true.... also we never (at least so far) know his birthday.... so no name and no date of birth.... a stretch but still a point in the argument.
6. Now.... i haven't met this character but i know of her existence... two characters by this point have alluded to the fact that Kyon has always liked strange girls.... and how the girl he dated in middle school was really weird. He claims he never dated her but they were friends....
why bring up the fact that he likes strange girls as an argument for why he holds the power? Apparently this girl has/had Haruhi like powers as well.... potentially even stronger and she seemed to know about it. Why would two girls who have never met have similar abilities.... especially such world changing ones? again i don't know the full story cause i haven't gotten to it yet but i'll still sue what little info i do have as a point.
7. Every time the world has changed.... He has been the one to change it back.... in fact most of the time the others don't even help.
the first time it was telling Haruhi about ponytails and the kiss....
the second time gets a little more complicated but he's the one who did what needed doing even if it wasn't him.... ugh i'll get to that point in the story soon i hope... the third time when it wasn't a member of the SOS brigade who changed the world he was the one who decided to change it back even thought there was the possibility of getting erased. half the time the others leave the choice completely up to him without putting their personal opinion into the situation.
8. half the time you can't tell what he's saying and whats internal monologue.... i constantly had to check if he actually said things out loud... half the time he does too.... i dunno it's just for someone who is normal why can he get away with all that... it's not really a point just an observation.
Do i think i'm right? No clue... will i be sad if i'm wrong? well yeah Kyon is my favorite character and i think it adds a layer of depth to the story... some people also twist the theory to make Kyon the Slider since we still (seemingly) don't have a slider in the group....
but there are also theories that Kyon's little sister and Mikuru are the same person... but then he's lusting after his sister and that's just gross... but they do look alike so i really don't know... i guess the next few volumes will tell.
but yeah... half the fun with this show is making your own opinion till the canon is determined.... i just wanted to save my little 'why i think this way' till i caught up...we'll see how it all goes.
next i'll finish that novel by Aaron Pogue i started the other day.... before i got distracted by Haruhi... yay lots of reading~

Completed: The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya
i'll try to keep this short.... but i have a feeling i may not succeed....
this is book 5 in the series.... and now the order of where events happen gets a new dash of confusing.
The order so far is.
Melancholy
Boredom
1 chapter of Rampage
sigh
2nd chapter of Rampage
Disappearence
last chapter of rampage
while that's not really the best description it is the most simplified one... thing is looks like it'sgunna get more complex from here cause i still haven't gotten to Live alive which would take place after sight but before the second chapter of rampage... *sighs*
This novel is a lot like Boredom in the fact that it's more like 3 short stories so i'll tackle it the same way.
Preface - Summer
no no no no no no no no nooooooooooooooooooooo
Endless Eight
Ugh.... no.... i've already watched the episode based off this 24 times.... why so many? Well the second season of the show thought it was a good idea to play the same episode 8 times... i have watched the entire second season 3 times.... hence 24 times....
Other then the blatant ignoring or the rule of thirds this episode isn't awful.... it's just tedious... it is the same damn thing 6 times, slight variation... the first and last episode are the most different of the bunch cause one is establishing the world while the other is finishing the arc.... and i do love the energy for the last endless eight episode.... still.... airing the pretty much exact same episode 8 times was an awful decision for a show that's only 13 episodes long per season to begin with.... oh and did i mention i had been waiting 3 years for the second season to come out? yeah.... not impressed
but i'm getting off topic.... how did the book handle it?
well the plot is Haruhi wants to pack as much fun into the last two week of summer vacation but apparently she's not getting enough since they have been repeating these two weeks of summer 15 498 times. Kyon and the gang have to figure out what haruhi wants to do and the answer comes in an unlikely place.
so.... how many times do we repeat the story? we don't.... we arrive at the final time because we see this from Kyon's head and he only remembers in full the one time.... the deja vu helps him but he only remembers the one set of two weeks.
as much as i hate this chapter.... and i really do.... i like the end... because once again works towards my theory that yeah Haruhi has the ability to change the world around her.... but it's not her power... someone else gave it to her. i don't know/care if i'm right.... i just think it makes for a good story if i am.
so fav part? hm.... i guess it has to be "i haven't finished my list yet" scene

so this is taking place just after the culture festival where the movie that was being filmed in sigh is being shown.
The Day of Sagittarius
Essentially the computer club president challenges Haruhi and the SOS brigade to a match with a game they made themselves... all to get the computer Haruhi stole from them back.... unfortunately if they lose the computer club will have to give up 4 new laptops as well.... so each member of the SOS brigade will have a computer.
this chapter is fun and again shows a lot of character development for Yuki, she has fun... at least we think she has fun.... even with the limitation of nothing that a normal human couldn't do she was just enjoying herself.
fav part? hmmmmmmmm.... I have two, i should clarify Yuki isn't my fav character but i do find her entertaining... anyways the first when she reveals to Kyon that the computer club is cheating and that she simple wants to put them on a level playing field through hacking.... she waits for Kyon to say yes.... in fact damn near every decision she has ever made in all the books first involves a quick look to Kyon for approval..... oh look.... more evidence for my theory.... yay...
the second is how yuki does eventually decide to go have fun with the neighboring club.... showing she can do more then just observe haruhi
Preface - Winter
yay~
Snowy Mountain Syndrome
5 books into this series.... and i finally get new content.... this episode hasn't been turned into an episode or movie yet.... but it was really good.
as a follow up to Remote Island Syndrome Koizumi has set up another murder Mystery.... but this time everyone is in on the joke. but that wont start till new years day.... this is new years eve and they are on a ski hill.... so why not ski?
oh and wouldn't you know it? there was a blizzard.... what are the odd that when Haruhi is with you while skiing something bad would happen--- it's not Haruhi who's doing this? it's not Nagato either? in fact Nagato.... to human interface created by the data Overmind to observe Haruhi is Sick?
they find a mansion.... where time is all screwed up and the door wont open from the inside
oh they are so screwed.
i wont say anymore though just that i liked the chapter.
my Fav part would have to be Kyons reaction to someone coming into his room.... as well as everyone's reaction in that situation... ESPECIALLY Haruhi...
Also we get to see more of Tsuruya and kyon's little sister....
so yeah fun times.... i only have one more before i catch up.... hopefully it's new content because other then Live Alive and that episode where Kyon gets the heater i've read everything that's been in the show.... i think...
also foreshadowing a football game chapter and a rpg chapter setting... looking forward to it.... i hope
this is book 5 in the series.... and now the order of where events happen gets a new dash of confusing.

Completed: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiy (novel)
3 new Completed in one day.... i would post this tomorrow if i didn't have 9 hours of class..... or plan to just plow through the next one.
a) it's not my fault the books are short and an extremely quick read.
b) . . . um.... well i have no other excuse i should have been doing more homework but i wasn't feeling 100% so i went with reading. hey it all worked out in the end i got everything done....ish
hm.... Anyways.
This book focuses on the idea of what would happen if there were no Aliens, Time travelers, Esperboys, Sliders or time warp/point of evolution/potential gods.
what if they all were just normal people?
If i had to pick between Sigh and This as my (current) fav.... this would win... yes i love sigh cause of the making a movie aspect..... but i love this cause oh one line.
and it's a similar line that was used in the last one.
"I am John Smith"
It's hard to imagine that one line could make me like an entire book more then other books in the series... but it does... i guess i'm odd like that.
but it does cement the argument that his name isn't john smith.... since he does (apparently) tell her his REAL name after and she still calls him John... cause apparently Kyon sounds silly. maybe you could just say his real name.... if he really has one or does he just think he's giving people his real name... maybe it doesn't exist?... i mean.... we see this all from his head......
Also a LOT of character development for Yuki and it was nice to see.... a lot more explanation of the world around them(it only took 4 books, 2 seasons of Anime and a movie) and a nice throwback to previous chapters/character/storylines AND it shows us something that we know has to happen but Kyon doesn't wanna do it right now so we are stuck waiting....
i only have two more of these and then i catch up till july.... I hate waiting.... but i don't think i'll be reading these any slower...
Also.... gotta love the Ponytail
also this is the last one of the day.... thats a promise :P
well.... maybe...

Completed: The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya
after the last one... i will make this as short as possible.... but no promises.
I hate to bring up the order that stories take place in but i have to or it'll make no sense.
The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya takes place in april
The sigh of Haruhi suzumiya takes place about 6 months later so i guess septemberish.
The boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya takes place between the two in july, the point just before their summer vacation starts.
to make things more confusing, all 4 chapters of Boredom were written before Melancholy. 3 of them were published in magazines before Melancholy... but it was published third in the series... okay i got that out of the way? yay
The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya
This is the first chapter, they go to play baseball with a girl who can warp reality and who hates losing.... yeah this can one end well.
fav part of this chapter? Ponytail - cancelled.
Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody
It's july 7, Tanabata and Kyon has been asked by Mikuru to travel with her to 3 years in the past.... wonder who'll they'll meet... again... it can only end well.
Best part of this chapter and potentially the enitre series? John Smith.
Mysterique Sign
Haruhi creates a logo for the club, they get their first case.... the computer club president has gone missing and his girlfriend is worried... too bad after checking out the apartment Haruhi loses interest.
Fav part? the fact that it give some evidence to the argument i follow with the show on who really has the power.
Remote Island Syndrome
Last chapter, and the first time that the anime has been different then the Novel... before this point the only differences were so minor....
i have to say as much as i love this chapter.... the anime did it better.
right plot, Koizumi gets the SOS brigade a trip to a remote island in hopes of keeping haruhi from being bored... who knows maybe there will be a closed circle mystery.... yeah this can only end well.
fav part? In the novel it the alcohol... it's a good thing i wasn't reading this in public cause i would have burst out laughing.... in the anime it's when they fall and Kyon tries to protect Haruhi
There.... short... yay!
In short these books just keep getting better and better also i'm so close to new content i am practically jumping up and down with joy.

Completed: The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya
After reading a chapter of this one i had to double check that i was reading these in the correct order.
why? because Kyon starts off saying he has been through so much in the past 6 months including being on a remote island... which i knew was a chapter in the next book.
oh god this series has messed up chronology as well...
to date there are 4 orders for the show, 2 of them canon (well i guess it could be considered 3....)
those orders?
Original TV release order (i call it Kyon order... some call Haruhi oder) this is where in the next episode preview Kyon starts talking about the next episode with will air.... but that's not the next episode chronologically... so Haruhi jumps in and states where that episode actually is in the order.
ex. end of episode 1 Haruhi pops in and says "next time in the menlancholy of haruhi suzumiya episode one!" while Kyon interjects with "wrong.... next one haruhi suzimiya episode two"
the second order is pretty obvious, chronological order (this is the one i call Haruhi order), this is if you did it in the order Haruhi states.
third order is the only one i consider not really canon is the DVD order (i call it Yuki order only cause she does the narration for the DVD next episode preview) and the only difference between it and Haruhi order is that episode 11 is in the episode 11 spot.... not episode 1.
the only episode that all three orders have in the same place is episode 12 "live alive"
that was until season two came around and change things...
see Season twos episodes all take place within the chronological timeline of season 1. making a 4th order that this show can be watched in.... and i have a feeling if they ever do a season 3? one or two chapters may be put in chronologically into season 1/2's time line.
long story short the time line is complicated as all hell.
now why explain that? what does that have to do with sigh?
very little i just wanted to get it off my chest... also my fav order is Kyon order.... and i'm not being biased cause Kyon is my fav character.. it just kinda supports some theories i have about the direction the show could take.... if they ever make more.... but I've rambled long enough and that is a discussion for later in the book reviews.
okay Sigh is about Haruhi and her SOS brigade (the club she made thanks to kyons suggestion) making a film for the culture festival.
it was my fav arc (so far) in the show and is the last arc of season two but happens just before the end of season 1....
why do i love this arc?
a) i've made a few short movies when i was a kid and i kinda got to relive the crazy things that happen as i read... granted i never threw anyone in a pond or had laser beams shoot out of their eyes but it still was a look back for me at my childhood.
b) we get some growth from Kyon, he is still traumatized from the end of Melancholy and has decided to let her get away with damn near murder because he didn't want to end up like he did 6 months ago. Unfortunately that doesn't last long and as Haruhi keeps pushing his buttons he does eventually snap... it's the first time we've seen him act out in any way and yeah he pays the price for it.... you don't nearly punch a girl with godlike/time warp/point of evolution powers and get away Scott free (even if i'm one of the people who thinks Kyon is the one who gave Haruhi those powers to begin with.... no focus i said i wouldn't discuss that now)
c) Ponytail~ it's just so cute and sad....
d) the resolution, makes me laugh every time.
so yeah if you like the show, the book is really good, you get even more snark from Kyon and a bit more insight into the situation he's been thrust in and possibly what being "chosen by Suzumiya" actually means. it also deal with the fact that just cause they are friends on the surface, the aline, time traveler and Esper may have deeper and darker reasons for their actions then we originally thought.
so next is Boredom which takes place between 1&2... i am glad it doesn't contain endless 8.... that's not till vol 5 apparently and i need some time to prepare myself for it.
almost forgot a new pic of kyon....

Completed: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya... again
This time i'm talking about the Light novel.... the thing that started it all.
Now i'll explain i have never liked any of the light novels i have read... they tend to be pretty much pure fluff, inconsequential to the plot or just a retelling in novel form... they also tend to be short.
However in Melancholy's case it came before it's anime/manga counterpart so it's not a retelling of the show but more the basis for one of my favorite shows.
It is in first person, we see/hear/interpret everything that's going on through the eyes of Kyon, The snarky dissatisfied youth who used to be obsessed with all things super natural but upon growing up finally came to terms with the fact that these things can't possibly exist.
we start with his first day of his high school career. everything is normal until the beautiful girl who sits behind Kyon introduces herself.
"i'm Haruhi Suzumiya, if any of you are Aliens, Espers, Time Travelers or sliders come join me... that is all"
to say the least the class is dumbfounded by this and the girl and her oddities become legend.... and for some reason Kyon feels compelled to talk to her... she does sit behind him after all.
after a few failed attempts Kyon finally manages to hold a conversation with her when he observes that she changes her hair every day... wondering if it has to do with the Aliens. This is the catalyst that starts it all. Eventually he gives her the idea to start a club full of odd people and mascots in the hopes of finding said aliens, espers and time travelers.
what she doesn't realize is that she has in fact gathered all three things in one room.... that she is infact some kind of powerful being that can rewrite the world and Kyon is just a normal ordinary human who for the most part is along for the ride because he has been "chosen by Suzumiya"
This series is 11 books long, i own 6 and 7 is coming out in June so i'll be doing a few of these in close succession....
this book is represented as the first six episodes of the show in chronological order and the show does an EXCELLENT job of staying faithful to the book. even some things i noticed as i read were in the show.... when scenery that is seemingly unimportant was being described i could see how they translated it into the show.... but i liked the book more.... probably cause it has more of Kyon's snark.
so yeah The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya is next which i believe covers them making the movie/culture festival.... that probably means it covers endless eight as well but seeing as it's a short book it probably wont be as painful as watching the same episode 8 times.... anyways after disappearance (book 4) these reviews will probably get long since that's as far (from what i can tell) and the anime has come so far.
if you haven't watched the show/read the book/read the manga i would recommend it... it isn't for everyone and can get a little goofy at times but it's so much fun and i just adore it.... plus kyon is just so cute....
yeah i have.... quite a few figures of him.... guess we'll go into that topic another time....
