Completed: The great and powerful Oz

Now... this is the Third Wizard of Oz related things i've reviews.
First was the stage play Wicked.
Second was the Andrew Lloyd Webber Stage play of the Wizard of Oz and now this....

...

Ok let me start off with this.
I hate children's media that panders to children. when i see something that is essentially glorified key jingling and hear it justified as "well it's just for kids" i begin to rage.
I have said it before and i will say it again as many times as it needs to be said.
Kids are smarter then you give them credit for.
The only reason children are as stupid as we think they are is cause we give them Crap media.
Not all kids shows are bad, not all kids books are bad, not even all kids films are bad....

But this? This was pretty damn terrible.
but it gets a slightly above average rating (6 out of 10) from people because it's "just for kids"
no.
That is not, nor will it ever be, a valid excuse.

But what about the fact that rating systems that are out of ten are Kinda BS cause no one gives a rating lower then five... (cause heaven forbid we fail someone... everyone should get a gold star)
still not an excuse.... i don't rate things cause honestly attaching a number to something completely personal opinion is a little silly... i either recommend it or i don't... after having laid out all my personal bias (cause boy do i have a lot)

So.... what was so terrible about this?

1. The acting.
I have nothing against any one individual actor in this film... i'm not a fan of any of them either but the thing that annoys me about the acting in general is they have their kids film voices on... the entire time. this is also probably the writer or directors fault cause some of the dialogue in this is just... repetitive nonsense... or even worse it thinks you are the Dumbest person ever.

I'll give an example.... at one point he mentions wanting to make fireworks.
when the fireworks are used we have the shot of them exploding.... NOTHING needed to be said past this point... most kids know that "oh wow that's how they are using the fireworks" BUT NO... this film takes it a step farther by having a character say "so those are fireworks." and you would think that would be enough BUT NOPE that STILL wasn't enough... they had to show the people firing it and the trajectory for an added. 'look at shit flying towards the screen' moment... more on that later. just incase you didn't get it.

it's like even a baby would get it at this point.
Also the jokes they were just "lets repeat the same thing over and over until it's annoying cause that's comedy
NO IT ISN'T

2. The canon.
I haven't read any of the books and my only exposure to the mythos are the things i mentioned above and obviously the 1939 version of the movie.... oh and the Wiz....
So i'm no "omg it has to perfectly fit in with all of the plot elements that have been laid out!" type of person.
but EVERYONE has seen the 1939 film, you'd be hard pressed to find a person who hasn't... to the general populace that movie defined the basics of the story.
This film TRIES to be in canon but it's like they didn't actually watch it.
the biggest thing that actually made me shout was: The poppy fields weren't poisonous until the wicked witch made them so... in fact she created the field to begin with....  so.... why are they there when this is 15-16 years prior to Dorothy Gale?
another thing was "why aren't they having the one witch make some ruby slippers" but then i realised they may be saving that for the sequel.... which if that gets made.... well at least a bunch of people will be getting a check... so some good will come out of it.

whatever.... pretty much everything this just kicks the canon to the curb while pretending to follow it.

3. The characters
i know this is unfair but compare the main character in this to the one in wicked.

He is a Liar who will willingly try to seduce any pretty lady but mostly is in it for the money when he's thrust into an adventure way over his head and he must find some way to be victorious while never really doing anything he just has knowledge of technology that this world doesn't.

She is an oddity, feared for her green skin despite her kind personality, she is picked on and made fun of by all her peers and yet she continues to try and help them, even after swearing off doing good deeds she still helps a friend who has done nothing to betray her cause in the end it gives the illusion of a happy story even though it may not appear to be happy for her.

Which sounds like a more likable character?

or lets look at the betraying friend?

In Oz it's someone who throws herself all over him, which of course triggers his commitment issues, and then when he goes to do the mission the 'prophecy' foretold she mistakes it as him picking the other witch and gives up her heart and humanity to get revenge because he doesn't love her enough despite him being nothing but kind even after she tried to kill him.

In wicked it's her room-mate who is the pretty prissy blond witch who has all the friends... the two don't get along mostly because Galinda can't for fear of being shunned by her other friends but despite all that high school drama the two do manage to form a bond.
When they travel to the emerald city and everything goes to hell Galinda happy reaps the reward of the guy she always wanted and many adoring fans who now all had a common enemy. But she's not really happy... she does some really horrible things to Elphaba to keep up the ruse of trying to bring her down but in the end she is sad by what happens.

Which sounds more complex?

Love interest
Oz: literally thrown in during the last minute of screen time, there is no chemistry other then she happens to look like a girl from Kansas that he loves. too bad she's marring another (and they mention his last name a few times just in case you don't get it.... so it's assuming you've seen the wizard of oz...  so you would THINK it would be kinda in canon but nope...

Wicked: it's conflicted because he's the handsome prince and should love the pretty popular girl but he sees past the green skin to the kind hearted person who just wants to have friends.

hmmm.... i wonder which one was built up more over time.

i think i've made my point.

actually no i haven't
The character of OZ... and this is true for ALL versions.... is a really unlikeable asshole.
he just is
so making him the protagonist means i don't like the protagonist.... if i don;t like the protagonist then i'm not gunna like the film.

4. The 3D.
Bias: I hate 3d
but i didn't see this in 3d i saw it in 2d so let me clarify.
I hate seeing films that are made for 3d in 2d because one of a few things WILL happen.

a) something... or many things will constantly come at you from the screen cause OMG it's 3d! 90% of the time it will have no relevance to the plot and will be held on for a really long time.

b) things will look like cardboard cutouts on a different plane of existence because the camera is focusing on the 3d crap but the way it's reacting to the filmed stuff doesn't make sense.  or the 3d things will appear to jitter in ways to match the living thing and it just looks wrong.

this film didn't need to be in 3d and I just hope this fad dies.

5. 3d character designs.
the cg in this film is pretty Cartoony.... not bad but it feels like it may have been better if everything was animated cause real life people do not fit in with the ascetic at all... also creepy cg flying money is creepy.

6. It's a prequel
this is a commentary of the idea of a prequel as a concept... we know certain characters HAVE to survive and that takes every last drop of tension out of the story... i can't get invested in something where i know the main characters are going to survive.

 But was it all bad?
No

1. Set design.
The sets in this film, at least the ones that aren't CGed are really fun and imaginative.... i can imagine it was a blast to make some of that stuff.

2. Costumes
If you do a Wizard of Oz story and you're costumes aren't incredible and fun then you just wasted your opportunity... this film embraced it and most of the outfits are just lovely.

A lot of people consider this is what they will do instead of a wicked film... i seriously hope that's not the case cause i think Wicked could translate into a film easily... it may have to be shortened a bit but it would be so much better then this crap

As for this film on it's own merits do i recommend it.
no
not even a little
it had some cool elements but it's not worth wasting 130 mins of you life on... just go watch the original movie instead... you'll have more fun.

Completed: Star Trek: Into Darkness (spoiler free)

first just to get it out of the way, i hate sci-fi and the only reason i saw this film was because i wasn't paying.

That being said i enjoyed it.
no panic attacks
great music
fun characters with great personality.
decent pacing
lots of action but not so much that you tune it out.

yeah lots of good things to say.

not everything is perfect.
I can't say any of the plot and have it continue to be spoiler free.... so this review will be short.
the lens flare while not as prominent as the first one still overpower most of the scenes.
went a certain character is revealed you know EXACTLY whats coming up next..... even if you barely remember any star trek from your childhood (apparently i watched t as a kid... do not remember any of it)
in fact a lot of things are so blatantly set up that it was almost insulting to the audience... but overall not bad.

I saw it in 2d.... i suggest seeing it in 2d cause i can imagine those lens flares get more annoying in the third dimension.

but yeah.... this one gets to show of it's characters more then the first which is great....

again in the end i had a good time but i don't wanna say much more then that.

completely unrelated side not some of the sets on this must have been so much fun to make.

Completed: Cloud Atlas

the film, not the novel.

so.... um.... yeah.
that was really long.
REALLY long.
Painfully long.

I would love to describe the story but i doubt i could do it justice so i will grossly simplify.
This story is about a Soul being reincarnated over time and how it connects to the souls around them over the course of Humanity.

Completed: Brave

Story time:

My friend brougth this to my attention about half a year... possibly more before it was released to theaters.... it looked so good and pretty and i vowed that i would see it in theater......

I tried a few times but due to work i could never make it happen.... hell one time i went to go see a different film... i couldn't make it and the film ended up being changed to brave..... ugh i was pissed.

so to say the least i was looking forward to seeing it, maybe because i have Scottish blood in my veins.... maybe because i like seeing film that have a bit of whimsy and fantasy or in the case of animation isn't trying to be real (stylized is always better in my opinion)

so what did i think........... hm....

first the summery:
Merida is a Princess who is fed up with how her life doesn't seem to be her own, wether by fate or by choice she has to find a way to create her own path without sending the clans to war.

yeah thats about as spoiler free as i can do this...

i was told the commercials sell a completely different movie then the actual film.... and yeah to a point it does.... but i don't think that is a good or bad thing.... just something to keep in mind.

alright.... The good:
Oh my god this movie is stunning, simply beautiful to look at, everything is so bright and colourful and the lighting and the water.... just so damn pretty.
The score is pretty good too... too many songs with words in them though.... i personally found it a little distracting in some scenes... yet the target practice bit it was perfect... so yeah... minor gripe.
the story is decent.... the pacing was okay and overall the characters were likeable.... now watch me contraict those last three points....

the not so good:
while the story is good and well done it is nothing new... we have seen this exact same princess not happy with her lot in life plot before.... i hoped they would take it in another direction and they do.... kinda...
The pacing of the story is good... the pacing of the character development is wrong.... certain characters change their tune at the drop of a hat.... other characters have to give up way more despite the situation....
The likeable characters don't get much screen time due to the overall situation.... i don't wanna spoil it so i'll leave it at that.

The annoying.... but not really bad:
Merida was really annoying to me at the start of the film, i know it's kinda the point.... but there are a few things she does that i'm sorry they crossed a line... and for a large chunk of the story there is no acceptance of guilt and no remorse... until randomly when she SUDDENLY and out of the blue starts realizing she may have a part to play in this.... it just felt like there was a character development scene missing or something.... again it's more annoying to me then really bad but i just.... i wanted to slap her so hard at one point... maybe i feel this way cause i crossed a line when i was small and i had to pay for my actions with everything in my bedroom aside from clothing and bed and such being taken away for 2 years... so maybe i'm a little sensitive to the 'shit you don't do to certain people in your life' line... but still... ugh she annoyed me....but only for a bit.... i'm rambling sorry...

I really did enjoy this movie, it was worth the wait... still kinda bummed i didn't get to see it in theater... is it pixars best? no.... the Incredibles and the first ten minutes of up will have that spot for a while longer... . but damn it was good....

so yeah sorry for nit picking.... i just.... get touchy with that one subject.

Completed: The Dark Knight Rises

*half asleep*
The good:
Characters were interesting... like Cat woman's glasses/ears... .um yeah

the not so good:
Bane was really loud... like twice as loud as anything around him for seemingly no reason... it wasn't bad just distracting.
we saw it in Imax and the aspect ratio kept changing.... may sound like nit picking but it was REALLY distracting to me.
impossible physics were distracting as well.... aka Bike/helicopter-plane-cars don't work like that.... or wouldn't work like that.
omg it's so long.... really really really long... i doubt it could be much shorter.... just so long...

The bad:
again i saw it in imax where they have these reclinign seats... which is great for seeing things but TERRIBLE for trying to get out to go to the washroom.. .there is NO extra room and i actually feel like thats a little unsafe

so yeah he film over was pretty good, i'm not the biggest batman fan out there so i know next to nothing about batman... but even with my complete lack of prior knowledge i had a good time.
I mean my only bad point had to do with the theater and not the film.... so yeah

I should have waited till mornign to write this.... but i didn't wanan forget all the things I mentioned... anywasy go see it, especially if you saw the other two since i'm sure you wont be disappointed.

Completed: Snow White and the Huntsman

so.... there's pretty much nothing in theaters at the moment... at least what is considered good i have already seen.

So yeah.... This film is hard to categorize... it isn't very good... i'd say it's bad but I have seen way worse.... it's annoying cause it's almost like there could have been a good movie but it just... wasn't.

Unfortunately it's hard to watch because.... and i know this is unfair so i'm just going to mention it here. It's tricky to separate the fact that the main characters are played by Bella and Thor... it felt at times like an odd crossover between the two and yeah... i know it's not fair but the film didn't give me much else to focus on.

That being said it is fairly 'pretty' but.... it's long... and easily could have been 30 mins shorter.... half of the artsy stuff feels like it was just made for the trailer... also i think someone just wanted to coat Charlize Theron in as much stuff as possible.... watch the film and you'll see what i mean.

HOWEVER.... who cares if something looks nice with a decent score.... how was the writing? the acting?

well...... most of the film is blatant exposition, shit comes out of nowhere and leaves just as fast (troll? dear thing from princess mononoke... i'll even throw the faeries into this category) and the dialogue is just not engaging.... it feels like actors reading off a script instead of people actually saying these lines... the only interesting character is the queen and she gets a fair amount of screen time but no they have to focus on snow white and her 'love' triangle?

But on the way home the friend i saw this with figured out how to make this movie better.... Go all Wicked on it and focus on the character whom we see as the badguy.... maybe they have reasons for why they act that way... i mean no one goes "i am evil so i will do evil things"... and like i said what little backstory we are given is interesting and you have this dynamic of a woman who is trying to assert her power in a male driven society by using her beauty but then kind of cursing herself for being that way but being unwilling to give it up for fear of growing old and weak and dying.

but no.... in this she just is evil for the sake of evil... she sees a flower growing? she plucks it and turns it to ash, a man and his daughter seem to truly love her.... she takes over the thrown and locks the girl away in a tower... it's just her actions don't make sense... why not act all good then spirit away the pretty girls in the night to keep your beauty strong? why not make the girl love you so that the betrayal has more emotion attached.

also this film borrows from a lot.... I felt like I was watching an odd mix of legend, princess mononoke, star wars and stardust... it's hard to describe but you'll probably see it if you watch the film.

final nit pick.... Kristen Stewart never seems to close her mouth... i don't mean she talks a lot she just leaves her mouth hanging half open.... it's just odd and looks uncomfortable and i found it a little distracting.

oh and the CG looks REALLY bad.... but that would have been forgiven had the film been better...

Edit:
The friend i saw it with Peach had this to Add Via tumblr

We found….

Lord of the rings.

Harry Potter (for there were dementors…)

She has symptoms like trecker jeggers stings in The Hunger Games.

How to Train Your Dragon. (Disney Princess’s special abilities to befriended animals does not exclude trolls)

There were Princess Mononoke elements in it……..(which was actually unrelated…)

Star Dust

and to be in the trend with everything that came out this year. A very skilled Bowman.
I’m not saying they copied anything, but….um..borrowed? or too heavily inspired.

Kristen looks WAYYY better with her hair in a pony tail.

Their approach to the queen was very interesting, but they didn’t go anywhere with it. They should’ve just made her the main character.

The interpretation and how it’s not just about the princess and her prince is cool.

The apple scene were pretty damn neat and made so much more sense than what it would have been had they followed the original story.

Why is it that the ending credit is pretty much identical to Avengers….

Thanks again Peach.

Completed: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

Well it was WAY better then part one.... but i think everyone in the world knows that already so....

Story time~

Way back in 4th grade i was over at a friends house when her mother came up to me all smiles holding a hardcover book.
"Look we got the new harry potter book! we were lucky since it was almost sold out!"
I gave her a blank expression.... I had never heard of the series before... and this was the 4th (or maybe 3rd) to be released.
however after that moment i noticed some of my classmates reading them as well... each one with a different cover....
However at this point in my life i didn't really like reading.... it just never drew me in and could never hold my interest.... however my parents had heard that this book was getting kids into reading... so they bought me the volumes that were out and gave them to me.
Again the first few pages didn't really catch my attention but my parents wanted me to read so they started setting deadlines "you must have a chapter read before the end of the week" kind of thing.

Now anyone who knows me understands that i'm am stubborn to a fault and if you tell me to do something... even something i would have done otherwise... i will dig my heals in an refuse... so this actually made me dislike reading.

so after being forced to read the first three books my dad brought up a different series, the Belgariad by David Eddings. "read it i you want... it's one of my favorite series"
so i put off reading book four and started the Belgariad... now i'm eight or nine at the point as i started reading it.... and a whole new world opened to me.... I ADORE the books and to this day when people say "what should i go read" i say "David Eddings, Brent weeks and Aaron Pogue"...

anyways so with this new found love of reading i go and read book 4.... and i loved it.... to this day it's my fav of the 7 harry potter books.... i still don't really like 1-3, they are okay but i just don't care....

So eventually the seventh book comes out and i read it in a day and i'm left with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth... i mean most of the book is really good but the epilogue.... kinda ruined the whole thing for me....
also i don't find any of the canon pairings have any chemistry....
but hey at least snape who since book one was always my fav character got probably the best storyline in that series so... yay~

so what was the point of this storytime?
well even though this series is no where my fav book series i still found it enjoyable and i'm sure years from now when it's not as saturated into the market new kids will hopefully pick it up and enjoy....
yes the series in my opinion has some flaws but it's a lot of fun and i understand why so many rank it as their top pick.... so yeah if you haven't already... go read the books, see the films.... whatever just enjoy it.... so yeah.... kinda glad there will be no more to tell the truth cause it ends on a high note *erases the epilogue from her mind*

Completed: The Help

Yeah it was a good movie and i'm glad i saw it... i'm sure it probably glances over some of the details but almost every adaptation in the world does...

um.... yeah not much more i can think of saying about that... other then it made me tear up.... through most of the damn movie.
it also made me laugh... there are some really great moments.

so yeah if you have the chance watch this movie.

Completed: The Avengers and Thor.... in that order

and tomorrow i'll watch captain america... cause thor and Captain america were the only two films aside from avengers i hadn't seen.... anyways i will avoid spoilers.... shouldn't be too hard...

The Avengers.
Wow.... that was the fullest i've seen the movie theater in a long time.... we had to sit second from the front to have seats together.... my neck hurts and everything was skewed.... but still the movie was pretty fun.
lots of fight scenes.... and near the end it was starting to feel a little long but still pretty good and just a lot of fun.
kinda pissed that the funniest line was spoiled for me from tumblr.... i don't mind people posting spoilers but.... please wait... if not a full month then just a week to allow people to actually see the film.

Thor.
Lens flares~
yeah it was good.... i mean not perfect but still really good.... and with good pacing since it felt pretty short.... i kind of wish i had seen it first so i could get some of the jokes in avengers but avengers really is stand alone enough where it wasn't necessary... but yeah interesting take on norse mythology.... especially liked the way they treated the rainbow bridge...

and yeah didn't see avengers in 3D... cause i Hate 3d.... please don't go see this... or any other film in 3d..... please....

ok... it's late.... and i'm tired.... tomorrow is captain america and experimenting with some new watercolours.

Completed: Titanic 3D

well... most know my opinion overall on three-dee so it's story time.

yesterday my programs year end show opened.... i was hopihn to stop by today but then my parents told me the whole day was planned away.... oh well i'll go tomorrow near the end for tear down.... anyways.

the day started with a trip to Playdium.... Wow i haven't been to one in 9ish years..... and now i remember why.
a) Arcades really are dead in north america.... i mean they had lots of selection and new games but nothing that was incredibly fun.... i mean.... i had more fun playing bubble bobble on the Neo Geo then i did one any other game....
b) Arcades are REALLY loud.... the first thing i did.... and pretty much the first thing i ever do at arcades in play DDR..... but the speaker was SO loud on the one side of my head that when i got off the machine i was dizzy from being deafened in one ear. oh well at least the dance pad worked which is always a plus.
c) Wow.... there are a lot of little tiny children who enjoy running around without looking where they are going and cutting lines... this of course is fine but there are a lot of games that really are tricky for people shorter then a certain height to play.... again no big deal but yeah... makes it crowded.

however we were only there for a little and at one point where we needed to run through all our credits quickly so we just stood by this game that would eat credits and give us a lot of tickets.... we didn't really care we just wanted to head to the next thing.

after that was a  quick stop to the shoe store.... nothing really happened there.... other then the shoes i like not coming in my size... but thats nothing new....

after that was dinner.... again pretty fine other then i've been really sick the past week and it hits me harder in the evenings... all it did was make me lose my appetite....

ah yes... the the main event.... or at least waiting.... see when my mother went when it first came out there was a line so she was worried.... so we were happily at the front of the line, waiting an hour for the theater to clear... we were let in and soon after the film starts.

the 2 hour and 75 minute masterpiece as they call it...
holy crap that film is long.... not a good or bad thing but i've found my max threshold for 3d.... whether it's well done or not... is about 30 minutes give or take.

now we all know the story....
people go on a big ship, ship is unsinkable.... hurray~
oh noes the mean nasty Iceberg hit the poor ship.... now it's Sinking D :
lots of people die D : not a happy film at all
but they throw in a love story cause.... why not....

how was the 3d? better then i've seen in other films.... any cross fades hurt my eyes and panning shots were painful too... in fact anything getting near the bottom or the edges but still coming forward cause of the 3d hurt... I know i said i would never see anthor 3d film..... i got dragged to this one... do i begrudge it? no.... will i probably be sick as a dog tomorrow? yeah but it's all good.

alright.... time to watch more Sgt. Frog... and by watch i mean sleep through.

Completed: Red Tails

Originally published January 28, 2012 on tumblr

this is my last old review, from this point on i probably wont update every day but i'll try to do my best and update as much as possible

Dear Mister Lucas,
Thank you for producing this film, it showed me an interesting piece of American history which i don’t know too much about being that i am Canadian… I know some of the facts were changed around to make for a better story… but still i enjoyed the film. I understand that if was really hard to get this to theaters but thank you for pushing so hard…

That being said…

Whomever does your editing needs to be fired, or at least teach them that there is more then just the Fade option to go between scenes… it seriously got distracting. The best editing should never be noticed.

Yes it looks cool when a wing rips off a plane…. the first time…. hell maybe even the second time…. but i swear you used that same wing rip at least 4 times if not more… i get it… you didn’t have a lot of money since it was coming out of your pocket… but i still think you could have done better.

While were on the subject of graphics… the whole thing felt extremely video game… again i understand money was tight but the effects looked really poor and again distracted from the overall film.

Side note, who thought helvetica was a good option to do your opening credits in? Maybe this is just a few years of typography based classes being drilled into my head but seriously… Helvetica didn’t fit the mood of bomber planes dropping out of the sky at all.

The pacing was also off… not sure if the film needed to be cut a little but something made it drag a little at the end…. and the writing wasn’t the best… and the acting hammy…
But in the end… i did enjoy the film… yes it’s flawed but it was fairly interesting. As interesting as war films can get i guess.

anyways mister Lucas… Thank you for your time despite the fact i know you’ll never read this.

Sincerely,

some random person on the internet.

Completely random side note based of the films previews.

NO i will NOT be seeing Star Wars Ep 1 in 3d… i saw it in theaters when it was first released…. where it promptly sucked… so do i want to go watch it in Pain-o-vision? no… NEVER… would i see ep 4-6 in 3d? probably not but i would go find it in 2d just cause i didn’t get to see those ones in theater… and those one don’t suck.

Battleship…. i knew about this for a long time but still… Battleship? i played the game once or twice… i sure as hell don’t remember force fields or bombs with outreaching chain tentacle things….
and those are the only two previews i remember.

i probably should have been painting instead of watching a movie but i’m glad i took a break… alas… there is still work to do~

Completed: Hugo in 3d (spoilers)

Originally published January 7, 2012 on tumblr

first…. sitting in a theater when your back/leg/arm hurt is a bad idea…. you would think it would be fine cause your not moving but see that’s the problem. you can’t really move and your kind of limited to the way you can sit…

Second… i HATE 3d

Third the only option to see it not in 3d was about an hour away…. and this was a spur of the moment thing my family decided so we didn’t want to go very far.

Okay i think that sets the stage for this fairly jaded review…. granted being in a better mood would not change the fact that this movie isn’t very good.

so yeah…. guess that's my shortened TL; DR.

anyways…. a while ago… a month or two out of nowhere came trailers for a really interesting looking movie called hugo

no one seemed to know much about it or what it was about but every agreed that it had an interesting look.

I was really looking forward to seeing it, i avoided reviews that could cloud my opinion and potentially spoil things.. i went into only having heard that many people feel like it was two separate films.

And after having seen it yeah… it feels like two movies.

the first half deals with a boy named Hugo running around the walls of the Paris train station making sure all the clocks are wound, That he manages to steal enough food to live and that he gets some spare parts for this clockwork puppet (automaton? i think that's what they called it) eventually he gets caught and a man makes him empty his pockets…. he just has some spare parts and a notebook…. after a quick flip through the book the man gets very upset and tries to get the kid caught by the guard.

ah but this kid is stubborn, after giving the guard the slip he goes back to the man and demands his notebook.

of course the man is stubborn two and brings it back and claims he’s going to burn it.
he follows him home and bumps into the mans god daughter whom he befriends.

then he goes back… tries to fix his doll and tries to get the notebook back…. we find out the book and the doll are the last remaining things he has that belonged to his dad who died by plot…. i mean fire. We find out he has been taken in by his crummy uncle who winds the clocks in the station…. but the mans a drunk and with hugo around now he can go off drinking.

so now he hangs out with the god daughter and they pretend like things are adventures and he eventually shows her the doll, she has a key that fits in the back and they turn it
and then the film changes.

i have a feeling many things end up on the cutting room floor…. because so much is unresolved from this point.

we find out the old man who took the notebook was the one who made the doll, he’s also an accomplished filmmaker, and an artist but for some reason (film blames the war…. i blame Thomas Edison) he had to give up making films, melt down all his film to make soles for shoes and with the little bit of money he made from selling the film he buys a toy shop….

but through hope and caring and whatever other positive feeling you want to shove in he realizes remembering the past isn’t so bad and they find that many of his films weren’t destroyed and now they are honouring him and he just wishes he still had the doll he made

so then hugo goes “i’ll brb” and runs off and oh no he gets caught by the guard who enjoys sending orphans to the orphanage. oh but he goes free cause he’s good at tinkering…. then he runs away but there's a chase and then he gets the doll but just as he’s about to be free he gets caught again and the doll goes flying onto the railroad

but this is a family movie so that doesn’t end badly and the man who took the notebook (which is never brought up again unless i missed something when i went to the washroom) says “oh he’s my child now so you can’t send him to the orphanage : ( sorry for you” and all is happily every after.
so yeah…. may as well start off with a positive.

i liked the look of this film…. it felt very steampunk with some of the designs.
….. um… yeah that's really it.

now why did i dislike this film

again…. i HATE 3d…. and whats worse… this film had no business being shot in 3d, would i have enjoyed it more in 2d? probably not but at least i would have been able to look at it without getting a migraine. let me clarify that i can watch 3d that's done well… this 3d wasn’t done well… too many things that were out of focus that my eye wanted to focus on…. too many things trying to come close to the screen and when you have really quick shots it really screws with your head in 3d… plus the film can get really dark… 3d films need to be bright and colourful.

The story isn’t very good…. this film is around 2 hours but it felt like 4…. i didn’t care about any of the side characters and honestly their presence wasn’t needed at all. Hugo as a character is interesting but the film isn’t about him…. it’s about papa George (guy who took the notebook) and how he was such an important part of the film making process. Hugo’s only purpose is the fix the doll and be adorable but in all truth he really isn’t the focus of the story.

This film does have a really cool look but it’s still an art film… which can be find but i don’t tend to like them… they have their place but just cause something it artsy doesn’t make it good… you need things like plot and character to have a good artsy film.

and i was so looking forward to this film… that’s probably whats got me the most upset…. i was looking forward to this…. and it was just such a disappointment.

alright…. think i have bitched enough for one night, i’m sure many people will like this film… it got 94% on rotten tomatoes. hell people are even saying the 3d was done well… yeah watch the running through the crowd scene and tell me it doesn’t make your eyes hurt. I think it’s mainly got such a high rating cause

a) it’s an art film… critics love art films

b) it’s Martin Scorsese… critics love Martin Scorsese… and after a quick glance at his filmography i can see i don’t like a lot of his film….that's just my personal opinion

c) it is, as many people have said, a love letter to cinema… and that aspect i liked but it did feel a bit forced at times

So yeah… i’m biased…. i like what i like and i didn’t like this…. sure others did and that’s fine i’m hoping once the hype goes away people will realize hey maybe it’s not as good as you first thought.
Or maybe it is just as good as you remember and i’m just wrong and that’s fine too.

Edit: i hear a lot of people bitching about the fact that it’s a family film and i didn’t make that clear (cause i wrote this just before midnight) that i didn’t care that it was a family film… there were a lot of children in the theater and you know what that made me happy cause it means they weren’t seeing crap like Chipwreked or whichever flavor of the week kid film that's just dull and stupid. my issue was mainly with the execution of the plot, the main character not really being the main character (i have this issue with a few films) and the 3d which i don’t care how many people say it was done well…. my migraine begs to differ.

double edit fun time: according to the oscars and the fact that this film nearly swept the show.... i am apparently the only human being on the face of the planet that feels this film isn't terribly good... hm...

Completed: North By NorthWest

so yeah… and older film….
and boy is it odd…
i saw it while dealing with a fever so i’ll probably glance over things… cause i barely remember it.
there’s a man who gets mistaken to be another man, he gets kidnapped…. nearly killed and when he tries to tell people what really happened no one believes him…. so he goes to find the man he had been mistaken for… funny thing no one seems to have met him.

even worse is that he seems to check out and travel far away just as the man who was mistaken for him is about to meet him.

so he chases him around, get framed for a UN murder and has to be very sneaky since all the cops everywhere are on his tail.anyways he bumps into a girl…. they sleep together… because…. why not? anyways she contacts the man that the main character was accused of being…. sends him to the middle of nowhere and we get the famous corn field plane shootout scene.

so omg the girl who he trusted after knowing for less then a day betrayed him…. oh snap…. so he goes to the hotel that the man was supposed to be out and wouldn’t you know it… he checked out… so he goes to the girls room…. because…. um….. the plot says so?

anyways i left to get a drink at the point so next thing i know they are at auction and the main character is trying to get himself arrested to protect his life from the bad guys who still think he’s the other guy.

however when the police say they got the UN murderer they get told to bring him to the airport and he is given to an older looking man who explains that the man who he was mistaken for never existed…. but if he could just pretend to be him for a day all would work out
he of course refuses cause he’s nearly been killed many times over…. but then it’s revealed that the girl he slept with was really working for the FBI and has fallen under suspicion… well he loves her so…. wait….. the girl who betrayed him and slept with him…. he’s in love with…. okay……
anyways he decided to go along with it…. there is a scene, she shoots him and runs off…. oh but the gun was filled with blanks…. now everyone is happy…. except no not really cause the girls going to go with the bad guys anyways and the main guy is locked in the hospital room to avoid suspicion… except one of the guys figures out that the gun was shooting blanks… and the main guy gets out of the hospital secretly…. he tires to save her…. they have a fight/chase scene on top of mt Rushmore….

oh no they are hanging off the edge, the girl only holding on by the man… he calls for help…. from the bad guy…. he goes to step on the mans foot and is shot by the fbi…. the federal secrets are kept safe…. yay!

however oh no they are still hanging… and she’ll fall…. but he turns on his sexy voice and pulls her up and now they are in the train where they met….. THE END
i’m not kidding…. the ending is abrupt

so what did i think?

what a silly movie…. i mean it’s good don’t get me wrong but soem of the set ups are just ridiculous. also i think it would have been fun had he really been the guy he was accused of begin all along… i just love films that do that…

also every girl in this film wants to sleep with him…. it’s a little silly.
but it;s good…. really long and the ending is rushed but still good…

Completed: Alien

Originally published December 3, 2011 on Tumblr

So yesterday not only did i see Kiki’s deliver service for the first time…. i also saw Alien…. our school has a theater and every friday they open it up and watch movies.

so some things to keep in mind about me while you read this.

I’m not a huge sci-fi fan if only for the reason that it takes place, most of the time at least, in space… i don’t like space very much… which is odd cause i love stars and planets and the whatnot…

Also i don’t like horror because i can’t find it scary (unless it’s a plague horror…. those things scare the shit out of me)… i focus too much on the “they did this effect like this” or “wow they did a good/bad job on the blood” to actually get immersed and scared.

So…. thats brings us to Alien.the version we watched was the ‘original 1979 theatrical version’ according to the Blue ray disk…

I would call this film a deserted Island sci-fi horror. We start with a title screen slowly coming to light over title cards…. then we are introduced to the ship which has a crew of 7 and a cat.

They all wake up from freezing expecting to be brought to earth but they seem to have gone way off course.

Captain Dallas goes to the computer system, MOTHER, and asks what is going on…. apparently there was a 12 second loop that they think is a distress call and their company protocol is to check it out or forfeit their ship.

so they go to this planet and three of them try to go find the source of the loop. Back on the ship Ridley, played by a very young Sigourney Weaver, checks over the message and finds out it doesn’t seem to be an SOS…. it sounds more like a warning…

oh this can only end well.

anyways one of the three guys comes across some odd looking eggs…. one opens up and we are introduced to the face huggers. they bring the guy with Alien stuck to his head on board, breaking all the quarantine rules,  and try to treat him.

again… nothing could possibly go wrong…

so apparently these aliens bleed acid and will not let go on the guys face… but the guy doesn’t seem to be dying… just comatose and paralyzed. Eventually they even see that the face hugger has let go and it somewhere in the room.

They do find it… and it’s dead…. hm… that didn’t seem so scary…. oh… except now there's a freaky alien bursting from the guys chest…. that can’t be good.

so now they have this vicious killer alien on the ship and people start getting killed off… eventually we find out that one of the crew members is a robot that was told to bring the alien back alive even if it was at the crews expense.

so the remaining crew + 1 cat end up trying to kill the alien with no luck and eventually decide blowing up the ship is the best course of action.

after a lot of painful flashing and a few more deaths only Ridley and cat are left, they make it to the escape pod and the ship blows up 3 times… too bad the alien made it onto the ship as well…. but it just seems to want to survive and doesn’t seem to be out to kill her right now…. still she dons a suit that’ll give her air and puts the cat in the freezing thing  then gets the alien to go to the airlock… then shoots it with a grappling hook and when it tried to get back in through the thruster she turns them on and burns it to a crisp.

so… seeing as she’s the only survivor she does her report and goes to sleep and hopes one of the scanners will find her ship.

The end~

now i know that's a lot of spoiler but honestly…. if you haven’t seen a movie this old then you deserve to get spoilers…. i’m surprised i hadn’t heard any spoilers to be honest….

but yeah… what did i think?

I liked it…. the practical effects looks amazing even by todays standards…. except the robot head…. that looked so bad that when it switched from prop to actor the entire audience laughed. also the explosion looked like a drawing but that's okay… it was the 70’s…. but the face hugger looked like real flesh and the alien had this crazy sheen on it and the sets were great.

the story was pretty good…. i mean like i said i don’t like sci-fi or horror but this was enjoyable. unfortunately i already knew ripley survived cause i’ve heard she’s in the second one so that took a little suspense out of it.

things i didn’t like… The flashing… in a dark room it was just painful to look at everyone had to put a hand over their eyes to be able to avoid headaches. oh and i  guess there was a tone of sexual imagery that just seemed silly… but otherwise a pretty good film…. i’ll eventually see Aliens as i’ve heard argued that it’s the better of the two films….

but for now…. i need some princess tutu~

Completed: The Secret World of Arrietty

Know the plot for "the borrowers" ?
great... now imagine that story with stunning visuals and an amazing score...

yeah that's pretty much this film in a nutshell.

I personally haven't seen every Hayao Miyazaki film. I was first introduced to him about ten years ago when my friend showed me Princess Mononoke... i think i saw spirited away shortly before or shortly after but i knew i liked the look of his films. Eventually i saw Naussica, castle in the sky and Howls moving castle.... all which i enjoyed.... Then i saw ponyo.

while i didn't hate ponyo i was kinda expecting a darker then the disney version of little mermaid and i got a much cuter and probably even more child friendly telling of the story... which is fine but since it wasn't what i expected i was a little disappointed. Again it wasn't bad but i never had been exposed to his 'kid movies'... hell i started with princess mononoke which is actually quite dark... anyways. next i saw kiki's delivery service.... which was cute but the pacing was a bit odd and i kinda wish there was more of a running plot.... still it was very slice of life so i enjoyed it. and now we get to arrietty....

if i had to rank  hayao miyazaki films that i have seen.... it would probably be...
  1.   Princess mononoke
  2.  Arrietty
  3.  Howls moving castle
  4.  spirited away
  5.  nausicca
  6.  Castle in the sky
  7.  Kiki's delivery service
  8.  Ponyo

but once again... none of these films are bad.

I really enjoyed Arrietty... maybe after i watch it in Japanese without the disney engrish songs it'll bump princess mononoke.... but for now it's a close second.

the good?
The backgrounds are lovely
the characters and their design is believable and interesting.
The music is stunning and i will be looking to get the soundtrack either on iTunes or on cd.... i don't care i just want it.
the story is cute, yes it's been told before but i don't care it had it's happy moments and it's sadder moments.... it didn't get me to cry but it was pretty close.

things that make it a close second?
The voice acting... it's okay.... but the dialogue... i dunno just a little forced? it was better then most of the other disney dubs but not as good as the mononoke dub. I look forward to hearing it in it's original form.... i kinda wish disney would just put out a sub version.... but i guess asking children to read is a bit much.... and apparently all animation is for kids...
the pacing is a bit odd... again that seems to be common in his films so it didn't bug me too much but it's something to mention.
there are some cg backgrounds... they didn't bug me but my friend whom i saw it with didn't like how the two meshed so i figured it is worth mentioning.

so yeah i really enjoyed this, i think it's one of his better works.... granted i don't think i've seen even half of his catalogue so who am i to judge.

go see it in theaters if you've liked any of his other films or are just an anime fan in general.

My Personal Issue With 3D

i'll try and make this short... emphasis on Try.

3d in film.

I pretty much hate 3d movies... why?

1)  even though i'm a college student not all the theaters around me have a student rate so if i want to go to  movie it's gunna cost around 13.... 3d films however will charge around 2 dollars more for the pleasure of wearing some stupid looking sunglasses... if doesn't matter if you bring your own 3d glasses... the charge is still there.  also if you want to see a film in imax 3d... you'll probably be charged an extra 5 bucks cause imax is expensive....

2) when not done well it's actually painful... i've sat through a few 3d films that didn't give me massive migraines but most (about 90% of the ones i've seen) do.... i don't get motion sickness so i have no idea why it affects me so badly but it does.

3) it's a gimmick so films that are like "omg we're in 3d cause it's cool and stuff" will almost always have a 'something coming at the screen' shot.

4) those something coming at the screen shots almost alwasy fail cause 3d doesn't ever actually jump out at you... the best you'll get is something coming forward a little but more likely then not 3d just gives the illusion that there is more depth in the screen.... not that things are coming out of the screen... if you want things to come out at you go to those lazer shows in science centers.... i know when i was a kid... not sure if they are still around.

5) films that focus on the 3d tend to forget that there is a thing called story and yeah it's nice when what we are looking is cool.... but we need plot and characters or we just wont care.

so yeah.... i actually endeavor to avoid films in 3d cause i do not want the industry moving that way.

but why bring this up?
well i own a 3ds.

3d in games

i love this little nintendo handheld.... the only thing i dislike? the 3d....
yeah the main selling feature i only turn on when it's necessary to solve a puzzle. *glares at super mario world.* but the thing is... i want to like the 3d... it's glasses free and very rarely shoves things in your face it really just focuses on giving more depth in the screen.

so why do i hate it?
1) you have to be in the perfect position to have the 3d work with no ghosting or pain... this being a handheld device means that finding the perfect position and then holding it for the duration of the game... it's not the easiest task.

2) other then one game where again it was necessary for some puzzles.... it's not useful at all. it makes the screen darker and the image a bit more blurry.... it's just easier to play with the slider set to 2d.

granted.... the system hasn't been out long and more games that better utilize the 3d will come out...

i seriously hope this whole 3d thing goes away soon... or they fix all the problems with it and start focusing on story again.

looks like i wasn't able to keep this short after all... sorry

Completed: Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of vengeance (probably spoilers)

this.... this was a joke right?
i mean.... it's just not possible...

ok let me set the scene.

it's approaching dinner time... and i'm getting hungry.... i head downstairs to ask my family what dinner plans are to be informed that we are infact going out for dinner.
we don't often go out so i'm all excited... until they add "and then we'll go see ghost rider 2 cause your brother wants to"
ugh... so yeah.... i don't like nic cage films.... i have nothing against him as a person... eh seems to have a sense of humor about himself and that's all well and good i just can't think of a single film he's in that i've enjoyed.

the reason i went even though i knew i wasn't going to like it? he was paying....

so yeah.... got some sushi then off to the film.

I think someone just figured out how to make motion graphics in after effects cause that's pretty much half of the film...

so yeah... i did see the original ghost rider.... other then him making a deal with the devil i don't remember anything about it.... other then i didn't like it... so i was surprised when 2 was announced cause all i could think was how bad the first one was.

oh well... so yeah.... spoilers ahead.
.
.
.

the entire point of the film is to give ghost rider a pallet swap.

i'm not even kidding...
i wish i was kidding...
oh and that kid is gunna cause problems in ghost rider 3.... i can see it now... *sighs*

i really don't have much else to say other then it made me think of blue exorcist more then once.... *sigh*

edit: i have been informed that the kid whom i figured would cause problems in 3 is the second ghost rider in the comic.... well that would probably be more interesting.... cause i wouldn't have to deal with nic cage's crazy face.... seriously the guy is really good at looking like an insane lunatic....
